You prepare the nest,

and you help them thrive.

They‘re all grown up and ready,
even already going steady.
You try to back off with grace
as you help them find a place.

You can only hope that the world will treat them nice
and that they‘ll stay good and wise.

Energizing smoothie

Energizing smoothie

This smoothie never fails to give me extra energy that stays with me throughout the day. The recipe fills two large glasses.

1/2 to 1 cup almond milk or water
1/2 cup cocoa water
2-3 cups frozen berries/fruits (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, mango etc.)
1 piece fresh fruit (banana/kiwi/pear etc.)
1/2 – 1 tsp grounded cinnamon (to keep up the blood sugar levels)image photo : Blueberry Fruit Smoothie
1/2 – 1 tbsp wheatgerm (optional)
1 fist of spinach/kale
1 tsp extra virgin olive oil (or another good quality oil)

Blend well together in the blender. Pour into a glass and sprinkle some bee pollen (you have to start slowly with a few grains and work yourself up to 1 tsp., note that some people are allergic to bee pollen), goji berries and chia seeds on top.

It is best to wait 15-30 minutes before you drink the smoothie as the goji berries and chia seeds will soften up. I always make two portions at a time and store half in the refrigerator until the next morning.

 

 

Healthy icecream

Here is a recipe for a delicious healthy icecream that the whole family can enjoy and I came up with when I had a few bananas to spare. Yes it does contain some calories of course but all the ingredients are very nutritious and healthy which is what matters the most!

6-8 bananas (slice up the bananas and put them in the freezer overnight. Great to use
bananas that are becoming a little dark)Ice-cream
2-3 hand fulls of frozen blueberries
10-15 frozen strawberries
3-5 tablespoons of organic peanut butter
2-3 squirts of organic maple syrup
7-8 dates

Put all the ingredients into a food processor and blend well together. You can vary the amount of different ingredients in order to change the flavor or thickness of the ice cream.
Enjoy right away or store in the freezer!

What do we need to lead a healthy life?

For the individual to preserve his health

it doesn’t take a whole lot of wealth.

Clean water and food is the primary act

then sewage is needed, that is a fact.

Regulations and transportation all for survival are

neccessary I guess in the near and far.

Democracy, transparency and women’s rights

tend to ignite endless fights

and all need to be lifted to new heights.

What about medical care?

Apart from the acute needs we share

again and again we seem to hear

No Smoking

that healthcare’s role is not too clear

and may not add years to our lives after all

so maybe we healthcare workers should shift our role

from being caught up in the system’s tangled net

to becoming political messengers that can truly get

the effect on health that suits our needs

and sow the urgent precautionary seeds

as health consequences take years to reap

and the causes tend to hide oh so deep.

 

What would I do if I ruled the world?

So what would I do if the whole world I ruled?

Save The World

(some people over less would have drooled)

Would I ban all industry and get the world clean?

There would be no pollution but economy would be lean.

What about transporting food by air

how can the pollution caused by that be fair?

Should I boost healthcare or cut it down?

Is it perhaps becoming the rich man’s clown?

Do I lengthen by days the life of the old

or vaccinate hundreds of children so their lives can unfold?

Do we continue to produce expensive drugs

and sweep the real problems under the rugs?

How come we haven’t cured the simple stuff

that affect the ones who have it rough?

Why do people still in cardboard boxes sleep

while others for mankind took a giant expensive leap?

The questions keep piling up and the more I know

sometimes the less I feel I’ve got to show.

With so many diet fads popping up all the time it is no wonder that people get confused regarding what to eat and what not to eat. We have become so alienated away from healthy natural food in its simplest form that we forget how to enjoy eating guilt free. It is no wonder that we are victims of obesity when the so called western diet consists more and more of things that we would not buy to put in the meals that we prepare ourselves at home let alone that our ancestors would have used for food preparing. Would you ever go grocery shopping and buy high fructose corn syrup, aspartame or nitrites to use in the supper you were going to serve your family? If we wouldn’t use these ingredients when preparing food at home why should we devour them in prepared fast food meals?

What is the best diet?Natural Food

When it comes to choosing the best diet there really is only one solution; eat naturally. Take a look at the food items in your pantry and throw away the ones that contain unnatural stuff that you don’t even recognize as food. Start eating the way we were supposed to eat; eat real food . Real food that is derived from nature, like vegetables, fruits and grains. If you want to eat meat and chicken think about what these animals have been fed. If they have been fed unnatural processed food that is precisely what the meat from them will be like – unnatural. Do not add a lot of extra salt to your food since natural food contains enough salt. Drink what the body is made up of – water! It all comes down to eating food that contains ingredients that you recognize as natural. White sugar for example is not a natural product since it has been heavily processed and washed with chlorine. White flour isn’t either.

There are no shortcuts when it comes to the best diet ever

There are no shortcuts in maintaining a healthy weight and a good health. You have to both put in the time at the grocery store to find healthy natural food and the time for preparing your food yourself. The sad fact is that up to 80 or even 90% of the food available in supermarkets is unnatural and way too processed to be healthy for anyone. Time consuming? Yes, but think about all the years that you can enjoy good health and an ideal weight. If your diet consists of natural unprocessed food you shouldn’t have to worry about obesity or diseases like diabetes. Of course you have to take it all the way and remember to exercise regularly as well.

Smoking increases the risk of these diseases and for women that take the pill the risk is 20-40 times as high. Certain kinds of cancer are more common among women that smoke, e.g. cervical cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, bladder cancer, cancer of the mouth and throat as well as liver and colon cancer. Since the year 1950 there has been a 600% increase in death rates from lung cancer among American women.

Osteoporosis is on the rise, especially among women. Research has shown that nicotine in cigarettes slows down the production of osteoblasts (bone producing cells) and makes them less active which again hinders calcium uptake. Smoking therefore reduces the bone mass which promotes osteoporosis.

Menstruation and smoking

Special for women is the fact that smoking can cause irregular menstrual cycles, increased occurence of menstrual cramps, lack of estrogen and premature menopause. A link has also been found between smoking among women and diseases that are connected to childbearing and infertility.

Smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Smoking during pregnancy is connected to lower birth rates and miscarriages, premature births, stillbirths and cot deaths. Smoking causes contraction of the arteries in the uterus and carbon monoxide affects the transport of oxygen to the placenta.  Smoking also affects breastfeeding as women that smoke have less prolactin (the hormone of lactation). Women that smoke are less likely to breastfeed and if they do they breastfeed for a shorter period of time than women that don’t smoke. Children of women that smoke tend to have more health problems, such as respiratory diseases, asthma, ear infections and behavioral problems as well as learning difficulties.

Chemicals in tobacco smoke

There are more than 4.000 different chemicals in tobacco smoke and more than 50 of them are known carcinogens. The best known substances are carbon monoxide, nicotine, arsenic, hydrazine and acetone. It only takes nicotine seven seconds to reach the brain when a person smokes so the effects are instant. That’s one of the reasons for smoking being so addictive.

Have we seen the full effects of smoking on women’s health?

It is thought that no country in the world has yet seen the full effects of smoking on women’s health although that time is getting closer as women have now smoked for decades and the harmful effects of smoking on a persons health typically has it’s effect over a period of 20-40 years. That time has almost been reached in Denmark where smoking among women has been more widespread than in other places of the world and the life expectancy of Danish women is shorter than among other women living in Western Europe. Unfortunately for women who smoke the answer to the question if smoking is more harmful for women than men has to be answered with a yes, at least when it comes down to women´s special features like everything related to menstruation, pregnancy, infertility,  and being more prone to getting osteoporosis. Vitamin D and infections

The number of infections caused by multi-resistant bacteria (MRSA) has been on the rise for the past years. These infections are now being diagnosed more often in people that are not hospitalized. At the same time research has shown that a large proportion of the worlds population is vitamin D deficient. Could deficiency of vitamin d and infections be related in any way?

It so happens that vitamin D is not really a vitamin but rather a hormone that not only helps boost the immune system but basically controls it. This, among other facts, is revealed in a book by Dr. Michael Holick, The Vitamin D Solution, which was published in 2010. Dr. Holick has studied vitamin D for the past 30 years. Since one of the major roles of vitamin D is to help the body fight all kinds of infections and a large proportion of the population is deficient it is not illogical to speculate if this deficiency could help explain the rise in infections.

Why are so many people deficient in vitamin D? Dr. Holick and many others think there are two basic reasons; we are not getting enough sun exposure, partly secondary to increased use of sunscreen, and we are not getting enough vitamin D from food sources.

It is common knowledge that our skin produces vitamin D when we are exposed to sunlight. A lot of people don‘t realize though that this production is hampered by the use of sunscreen. Sunscreen with Spf of 30 can thus reduce vitamin D production by 95-99%. Dr. Holick and others are not recommending that we stop using sunscreen altogether but that we let the skin be exposed to sunlight for a short period of time before we put sunscreen on in order for us to be able to produce this important vitamin.  The amount of vitamin D that we can produce through the skin is much larger than the amount that we can get through our food or through supplements and lasts much longer in the bloodstream. Dr. Holick is not promoting suntanning and warns strongly against sunburn.

Vitamin D in food

There are not a lot of food sources that contain vitamin D, mostly oily fish such as herring, salmon, trout, sardines and halibut. Vitamin D is also found in eggyolks and in some amount in mushrooms. Cod liver oil is also rich of vitamin D and research has shown that people living in the northern countries such as Iceland that consume cod liver oil on a daily basis are not as vitamin D deficient as those who do not take cod liver oil. Mushrooms are remarkable for the fact that if they are exposed to ultraviolet light of B type during the cultivation process they will produce vitamin D in their “skin“ and thus can increase their vitamin D amount markedly.  Such vitamin D rich mushrooms are now available in Australia and the US.

Living above 35°north latitude

People that live in the northern hemisphere of the world, defined by living above 35° north latitude, have less opertunity to produce vitamin D from sunlight than people living further south. Therefore they need to supplement on vitamin D in order not to become deficient. Research has shown that people living in northerly countries, e.g. Iceland, are not getting enough vitamin D from their food. That indicates a need for taking vitamin D supplements. How much is needed has been debated and people are getting mixed messages. In Iceland for example the official guidelines are that grownups should take 400 international units (iu) per day or 10 micrograms while Dr. Holick and others recommend that grownups need to take 1000 -2000 iu per day. Some experts recommend even higher doses.

What should we do?

We need to come up with clear recommendations for the public about both sensible exposure to sunlight as well as amounts of vitamin D to consume. The sun is the source of all life on this earth and we have to be able to be exposed to it to such a degree that we will be able to produce enough vitamin D without increasing our changes of getting skin cancer. Diseases like rickets in children that were thought to be extinct are on the rise secondary to vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D not only protects us against all kinds of diseases and infections but also can protect us from high blood pressure, heart disease, certain kinds of cancer (e.g. breast- and colon cancer), autoimmune diseases, arthritis and fibromyalgia as well as increasing our life expectency.  We live in times where the cost of health care is constantly on the rise so cutting down on infections and diseases with simple measures like supplementation of vitamin D and sensible sun exposure can prove invaluable, both financially as well as to improve the quality of our lives.
